    Think-Ink:Are U.S. Consumers Buying Non-OEM Cartridges?

Yes! According to a new report from Lyra Research and Recharger Magazine,
44 percent of the consumers surveyed have purchased an aftermarket
cartridge . The report, Think Ink: The 2005 U.S. Ink Jet Cartridge User
Survey, also found that 47 percent of respondents have never purchased
an aftermarket ink jet cartridge, while 8 percent did not know these
    cartridges were available.
In a first for the remanufacturing industry, Recharger Magazine has
commissioned leading market-research firm Lyra Research to conduct the
most comprehensive report ever compiled about consumers’ buying
preferences for aftermarket and OEM printer consumables.
In 2004, more than $10.2 billion worth of ink cartridges were sold in
North America alone. Despite the large number of ink cartridges
purchased each year, consumers have long complained about the high cost
of OEM ink cartridges and looked for alternatives. Today, the market
offers consumers more choices than ever before, and Lyra forecasts that
the aftermarket’s share of North American ink jet cartridge shipments
will grow from about 23 percent in 2004 to 31 percent in 2009.
