Former H.P. Executive Indicted for Leak of Secrets
    Atul
Malhotra joined Hewlett-Packard as a vice president in its printing
division in May 2006. His employment ended four months later. In
between he got himself into hot water with H.P., and, now, the federal
    government.

The cause of the trouble was an e-mail message.
    Mr.
Malhotra is alleged to have sent the message, with the subject line
‘for your eyes only,’ to a senior vice president at H.P. According to
an indictment filed in federal court in San Jose last week, the message
contained sensitive information about business practices at I.B.M.,
where Mr. Malhotra had previously been employed. In a statement, H.P.
said the activity for which Mr. Malhotra was charged “was in direct
violation of clear H.P. policies.” It went on to say that H.P.
conducted an internal investigation at the time, fired Mr. Malhotra and
reported the incident to law enforcement.

    H.P. declined to comment further.
    A
lawyer for Mr. Malhotra did not return a call seeking comment. The
lawyer’s voice mail said he was on vacation. The federal prosecutor
involved in the case had no comment. The incident is curious for its
timing. Mr. Malhotra was fired for leaking secrets just weeks before a
scandal broke in which H.P.’s top brass, pursuing a leaker on its board
of directors, were found to have been trying to dig up secrets on their
own executives and members of the media. It might seem that the company
was tougher in enforcing its rules and standards in pursuing Mr.
Malhotra than it was on its own officers.

Former HP exec accused of passing along confidential info from IBM
    A
former vice president of Hewlett-Packard Co. has been indicted for
allegedly passing on a confidential e-mail from another previous
employer.Federal prosecutors, filing in U.S. District Court in San
Jose, said Atul Malhotra was a director of sales and business
development in Armonk, N.Y.-based International Business Machines
printing-services division in March 2006 when he asked for confidential
    pricing information about company services.
    In May 2006 Malhotra
became a vice president of Palo Alto-based HP’s  printing division. The
indictment alleges that two months later Malhotra sent an e-mail to an
HP senior vice president with the subject line “for your eyes only,”
and that an attachment included the confidential information from
IBM.Prosecutors say Malhotra sent a similar e-mail to another senior
vice president.HP said it conducted an internal investigation, fired
Malhotra and reported the activity to authorities and to IBM.H
