STAPLES Canada collects over 838,000 used ink cartridges
    RICHMOND
HILL, ON, Mar 9, 2009 a little over a month to go until Earth Day,
STAPLES Canada Million Cartridge Challenge is close to reaching their
goal of diverting a million ink cartridges from landfills .162,000
cartridges to go, Canada. With the help of customers and vendors from
across the country, STAPLES has collected more than 838,000 used ink
and toner cartridges so far as part of their Million Cartridge
Challenge. STAPLES’ goal is to collect one million used cartridges,
with the grand total being announced on April 22 – Earth Day.

    “If
we continue at this pace, we should exceed our goal of a million
cartridges by Earth Day,” said STAPLES Canada president, Steve Matyas.
It takes 400 to 1,000 years for an ink/toner cartridge to decompose in
a landfill site. The Million Cartridge Challenge is just one of the
many ways STAPLES aims to fulfill their environmental goals; the
retailer also sells a number of eco-friendly products, including
recyclable bags, and will participate again during Earth Hour by
ensuring stores turn off their lights for one hour on March 28.”We can
all make a difference and it’s obvious that Canadians want to help make
that change. We have been collecting used ink/toner cartridges for ten
years now, and last year we decided to challenge Canadians to help
reroute a million away from landfill sites – this will be the most we
have ever collected in a year.” continued Matyas. All STAPLES stores
across Canada are continuing to collect used ink and toner cartridges,
which can be dropped into the bins located inside. The Million
Cartridge Challenge will wrap up on Earth Day – April 22, 2009.
