HP stops sale of low-end inkjet printers
    Printer
manufacturer Hewlett Packard has decided to stop selling low-end inkjet
printers (priced below $30) and focus on mid- and high- range printers
in order to increase the company’s profitability. The decision to give
up low-end inkjet business was taken in the best interests of the
company so that it is ready for any market slowdown. “When planning for
2009 we were expecting the market to slow down, which would affect
units sold. This has nothing to do with the global financial crisis but
a cautious decision taken by the company,” said Amin Mortazavi, GM for
HP IPG (Imaging and Printing Group) Middle East.

    This is a
worldwide decision taken by HP and Mortazavi said it would benefit
Middle East consumers as many of them are first-time buyers. “If you
look at the single-function inkjet printer, the European market
consolidated three years ago with consumers buying MFDs (multi function
device). However, in this region as they are first-time buyers they opt
for single function inkjet printers where the low-end printer can be
offset by the mid- and high- range printers.”

    He said: “At the
end of the day HP needs to do profitable business. Increasingly
customers are choosing mid- and high- range printers. The low-end
printer business was only five to six per cent of our business.
Therefore, its not a huge pinch to the company.”HP is also set to
launch a new range of products in May this year. The other strong
players in the inkjet space is Lexmark, Canon, Epson, Brother and
    Samsung.
