Samsung Partners with EPA in ‘Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR’ Campaign
Samsung is providing ENERGY STAR-qualified consumer electronics and home appliances for the eco-house exhibit available to view now on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. & WASHINGTON–Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics and telecommunications, today announced that it has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide consumer electronics and home appliances for the ‘Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR’ campaign event at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. through Earth Day, April 22. Most recently, Samsung was named as an award recipient for Excellence in Product Labeling by the ENERGY STAR program. As part of the campaign, an entire eco-friendly home was constructed to demonstrate how using ENERGY STAR qualified products can help consumers minimize energy consumption and save money in the process. Samsung’s ENERGY STAR qualified consumer electronics and appliances are exhibited throughout the house, from the kitchen to the living room to the home office.“This campaign presents a terrific opportunity for consumers to experience and learn about the positive impact choosing energy efficient products for the home can have on the environment,” said Kris Narayanan, director of marketing for Samsung Electronics America. “Samsung is proud to provide consumer electronics and home appliances to this exhibit. We applaud the EPA’s efforts to promote energy-efficient alternatives for the home.”

This interactive, custom-built exhibit also includes an array of environmentally friendly building materials and is designed to demonstrate how important these practices are toward reducing energy consumption and helping to curb global warming. As part of the campaign, the EPA has partnered with organizations around the country, including manufacturers, retailers, utilities and non-profit organizations to host events that feature the ENERGY STAR House.“Through innovations in R&D and design, Samsung has worked diligently to enable many of our products to meet or exceed the ENERGY STAR requirements set forth by the EPA and the Department of Energy,” said Tim Baxter, president, Consumer Electronics Division, Samsung Electronics America. “To be a selected partner for this exhibit is a privilege, and it is our hope that consumers will see first-hand how steps taken at home can make a tremendous difference to their lives and our environment.”

    An Eco-Friendly Entertainment Experience
As part of the ENERGY STAR eco-friendly exhibit, Samsung is providing an array of appliances and consumer electronics throughout the home. A 40-inch Series 6000 LED HDTV, a 26-inch Series 3 360 LCD HDTV, and a BD-P3600 Blu-ray player are the centerpieces of the entertainment experience.Samsung’s new line of LED HDTVs, including the 40-inch Series 6000 LED HDTV which will be featured in the ENERGY STAR house, utilizes edge-mounted LEDs as their primary light source rather than traditional Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL). By using this innovative technique, the entire line boasts superior contrast ratios and improved picture quality, ultra-thin design, and substantial decreases in energy consumption. Power consumption is reduced by up to 40 percent versus traditional LCD HDTVs of a similar size, easily meeting ENERGY STAR v3.0 guidelines. The new line also includes a power indicator menu and an optimized energy savings mode, and the LED modules are mercury-free, which makes for cleaner manufacturing and safer recycling when compared with backlight technologies currently available. Finally, these TVs require less material to manufacture and are thinner, reducing packing material and consumer waste. The smaller packaging allows for more units to be shipped and less fuel to be consumed at a time which potentially reduces Samsung’s carbon footprint.

Samsung’s 26-inch Series 3 360 LCD HDTV, which is also ENERGY STAR v3.0 qualified, is perfectly suited for a versatile smaller room where the TV must meet requirements for both form and function. The display boasts Samsung’s unique design and offers a number of connection options to not only watch movies but also play PC-based games.Samsung’s BD-P3600 Blu-ray player promises top-notch video playback, comprehensive audio decoding, and unprecedented networking capabilities for an immersive, theater-like experience, all within the ENERGY STAR v3.0 guidelines. This impressive player includes state-of-the-art connectivity features including Netflix movie and Pandora music streaming to your TV over Wi-Fi and Full HD 1080p playback of Blu-ray discs. In addition, the BD-P3600 manages to keep its power usage at a minimum, even in standby mode when it uses only 1W of electricity.

In the kitchen of the ENERGY STAR house, Samsung has provided the DMR78, a built-in dishwasher that is a conservation trifecta not only featuring savings in energy and water but is also one of the quietest dishwashers in its class at 49dBA. The DMR78 is ENERGY STAR qualified, using only 289 kWh/year. In addition, it includes a hard food disposer to eliminate the need to prewash dishes and in turn, conserve water.

Samsung’s super capacity front-loading washer is also featured in the ENERGY STAR house. The WF448 is the first washer to offer families an extra large capacity of 4.5 cu. ft., which is the largest capacity residential drum washer in North America. The larger capacity means fewer loads; thus savings in energy and water. While the WF448 is ENERGY STAR qualified, it offers plenty of power with a 1300 RPM maximum spin speed, yet noise and vibration is controlled to a minimum with its Vibration Reduction Technology. To match the WF448 washer, Samsung also provided a DV448AEP electric dryer. The DV448AEP offers 7.4 cu. ft. of drying capacity and includes Samsung’s advanced steam drying feature to reduce wrinkles and remove odors.

    Working and Conserving
Whether it is school work, paying bills or running a business, the home office is always working. For this reason, conserving energy in the home office is important. In the ENERGY STAR house, Samsung features its latest LCD monitor, the P2370, which is designed to reduce one’s overall carbon footprint, focusing on the entire lifecycle of the product. This 23” Full-HD LCD monitor is ENERGY STAR v3.0 qualified and consumes up to 33% less energy than other LCD monitors of similar size. The P2370 further features an auto-standby capability to immediately reduce its power consumption to <0.3W when it does not sense an active display signal. Additionally, the P2370 is VOC-free, enabling easier recyclability and is only 1.18” thin, which results in a reduction of packing materials. All of these energy-saving features make for a smaller product footprint, which enables Samsung to use less space in the shipping/distribution process.

The ENERGY STAR home office also features the Samsung CLX-3175FW wireless color laser multifunction printer. This ENERGY STAR qualified color 4-in-1 laser printer is one of the smallest and quietest in its class, resulting in less packaging and less noise pollution. The CLX-3175FW operates at only 48dBA which is the same volume as a moderate rainfall or a normal conversation. Additionally, this printer contains advanced energy conservation technology that reduces power consumption when it is not in active use. When the CLX-3175FW does not receive data for an extended period of time, power consumption is automatically lowered to consume less than 15W. Recycle your toner cartridges from the convenience of your home. Simply print off a label at and you can recycle the cartridges and their packaging.“We are pleased to work with companies like Samsung to help consumers take steps to fight global warming through a more efficient home,” said Kathleen Hogan, Director, Climate Protection Partnerships Division, U.S. EPA.

At the conclusion of the campaign, Samsung will donate the consumer electronics and home appliances in the ENERGY STAR House to the Boys & Girls Club of Washington, D.C.For more information about Samsung’s environmental initiatives and the products featured in the ENERGY STAR house, please visit
