HP TO MERGE PRINTER & PC UNITS
Hewlett-Packard Co. plans to combine its printer and personal computer units under the head of its PC business, former Palm Inc. CEO Todd Bradley, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The Journal cited unnamed “people familiar with the situation” who said details and a date haven’t been finalized but the plan awaits CEO Mark Hurd’s final approval. It isn’t clear what the move will mean for Vyomesh “V.J.” Joshi, the boss of the printer business.

The move would mark a reversal in the roles of the two units since Hurd took over as CEO four years ago. At that time HP got 70 percent of its profit from the printer business and only 5 percent from PCs. Now printer growth has slowed and HP has become the world’s biggest computer maker by shipments.

It also reverses one of Hurd’s first moves as CEO. His predecessor, Carly Fiorina had merged the two units previously in an effort to get the PC side moving. Hurd split them when he brought in Bradley to run the PC business. It its most recent quarter ended July 31, HP said PCs brought in $8.43 billion in revenue and $386 million in earnings — about 12 percent of total profits. Printer and ink sales accounted for $5.66 billion in revenue and $960 million in earnings — 30 percent of HP’s profits for the quarter.HP has major operations in Corvallis and Vancouver, Wash.
