HP ON THE ATTACK ,GETS U.S. TRADE REVIEW ON PRINTER CARTRIDGES
Oct. 09- Hewlett-Packard Co.’s complaint seeking to bar imports of certain printer cartridges that it claims use protected technology won review by U.S. trade officials.
The U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington yesterday said it would investigate the complaint brought last month by Hewlett-Packard, the world’s largest maker of personal computers and printers.“By instituting this investigation, the USITC has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case,” the agency said in a statement. The agency, set up to protect U.S. markets from unfair trade practices, has the power to ban imports that violate patents.
Hewlett-Packard’s patent rights are being violated by 11 companies based in the U.S. and Asia, the company said in a complaint filed in September.The companies “have engaged in violations” through unlicensed imports, sales for importation and sales in the U.S., Palo Alto, California-based Hewlett-Packard said in its complaint.The company has filed patent-infringement lawsuits against competitors including China-based Ninestar Technology Co., South Korea’s InkTec Co. and Taipei-based Acer Inc.
The closely held companies that will be reviewed by the ITC include China-based Zhuhai Gree Magneto-Electric Co., Shanghai Angel Printer Supplies Co., Shenzhen Print Media Co., Zhuhai National Resources & Jingjie Imaging Products Co., Tatrix International and Ourway Image Co.; Hong Kong-based Mipo International Ltd.; Miami-based Mextec Group Inc.; and three companies in California, InkPlusToner.com in Canoga Park, SmartOne Services LLC in Hayward and Comptree Ink in the City of Industry.
The U.S.-based companies didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.
The case is In the Matter of Certain Inkjet Supplies and Components Thereof, 337-691, U.S. International Trade Commission (Washington).
