Epson Is Expanding its Printer Manufacturing Plant in the Philippines

MANILA – The Japanese maker of the Epson brand of printers is expanding its manufacturing plant in the Philippines.

In a statement, Seiko Epson Corp said it will spend 12.3 billion yen (about P4.6 billion) to increase the capacity of its printer and projector factory in Lipa, Batangas. The plant produces 7.8 million units of printers and projectors a year.

The investment, which will increase production area to 18.5 hectares, will entail 7,500 in additional hires from the existing 12,500.

"As it implements its mid-range business plan, Epson has determined that its current inkjet printer and projector manufacturing facilities in China, Indonesia and the Philippines are insufficient to meet expected demand," the company said.

In light of this, Epson sees "the need to significantly boost production capacity for its core high-capacity ink tank models, which are currently experiencing rapid growth, and also for office inkjets, which are beginning to make steady inroads into the market."

The company aims to start construction in the first quarter of next year and expects to finish it by 2017.

"With growing demand for projectors used in business and education, expanding commercial applications and increasing penetration in emerging economies, Epson forecasts its growth will surpass that of the market," the company said.

Including Epson Precision, Seiko Epson has a total of three units in the Philippines including a sales arm and an export-oriented company.
