,  Epson America Inc., a business imaging hardware and software provider, on Dec. 2 announced new workgroup printers, the WorkForce Pro WF-8590 and WF-8090, with Precision Core technology, which produces dots on paper from print heads that deliver up to 50,000 droplets per second.

The new WorkForce Pro 8000-Series printers feature black and color output at speeds up to 24 pages per minute; a maximum, optimized resolution of 4800 x 1200 dots per inch; and a monthly duty cycle of 75,000 pages, although Epson recommends 5,000 pages per month for best performance. The WF-8590 is a multifunction printer with print, scan, copy and fax functions. The WF-8090 is a single function color printer.

The WF-8590 prints on both sides of paper (duplex) at 16 ppm. A  flatbed CIS (Contact Image Sensor) color scanner (11.7 × 17 inches) with an automatic document feeder sits atop the MFP. The scanner supports a maximum resolution of 9600 x 9600 dpi
    (hardware resolution is 1200 x 2400 dpi).
    Scanner features include:

    Scan to cloud and email.
    Scan to memory device.
Scan to PC via included Document Capture Pro software.
Protect scan  PDF output via password.

The standard paper cassette tray holds up to 250 sheets of plain paper. A rear paper slot supports 50 sheets of A3 (11.7 × 16.5 inches) size paper, 80 sheets of letter-size sheets, or ten envelopes. If you use the printer in a small office or work group setting, it can support a maximum of 1830 sheets with up to three optional 500-sheet paper trays. A front paper feed slot can handle variable-size paper defined on the printer’s five-inch color touchscreen prior to input—no need to swap paper in a tray for one or two odd-size print jobs.

Connect to the printer via wired Ethernet, wireless IEEE 802.11b/g/n or high-speed USB. The WF-8590 also supports Wi-Fi Direct, Epson Connect and Apple AirPrint to print directly to the MFP from mobile devices and laptop computers. The WF-8590 can also be used with Google Cloud Print.

The WF-8590 uses four color ink cartridges (Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow: No. 748 in standard, high or extra-high capacity).  It is 18.3 inches high and 23.2 inches wide, with a depth of 22.4 inches. Without optional paper cartridges, the MFP is 78 pounds.

The MFP and the single-function WF-8090 will be available in January 2015 through the Epson ImageWay [channel] Partner Program and authorized commercial channel resellers. The printer Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price and printer cartridge price were not available at press time.

The new WorkForce DS-520 color document scanner scans output up to 30 ppm and 60 images per minute. It supports TWAIN and ISIS drivers for Windows PCs and Mac computers, and output resolutions ranging from 75 dpi to 1200 dpi—with an optical resolution of 600 dpi.

The DS-520 has a 50-page automatic document feeder with double-feed detection. It handles a minimum paper size of 2.1 inches x 2.9 inches to a maximum of 8.5 inches x 36 inches.

    Supported paper types include:
Rigid plastic ID or credit cards.
    Business cards.
    Folded, oversized documents.

The scanner has over 30 user-defined scan job settings and a duty cycle of 3,000 sheets per day. Epson America says that the paper roller assembly kit can handle 100,000 cycles of moving paper over the one-pass, single scanner head to the output tray.

You can scan output to searchable PDFs or directly to the cloud. The scanner supports a high-speed USB 2 interface for desktop use or supports an optional Ethernet (RJ-45, 10BaseT/100Base TX) connection for work groups or small offices.

    Software included with the scanner:
    Epson Scan.
EMC Corp.’s Captiva ISIS (Windows only).
    ABBYY FineReader OCR.
    Document Capture Pro.
    NewSoft Presto! BizCard OCR.

The Epson Workforce DS-520 is available now for $400 (MSRP).
