2004: The Year of the Color Laser PrinterLYRA RESEARCH
This past year was a volatile one for the color laser printer market, as the
number of products increased dramatically while prices continued to fall.Color
laser printer vendors were challenged to bring feature-rich products to market
while maintaining or lowering prices. Many vendors experienced tremendous growth
in sales, leading many to believe that 2004 was “the year of the color laser.”
While that infamous phrase has been tossed around for several years, it does
indeed appear that 2004 was a bellwether year for color laser printer vendors.
Lyra estimates that worldwide color laser printer shipments totaled 1.85
million units in 2004, a 47 percent increase over shipments in 2003. The
sub-$1,000 segment saw the most growth—an 87 percent increase in shipments. This
explosive growth in lower-cost hardware negatively impacted worldwide color
laser printer revenue, which declined 7 percent in 2004. Nevertheless, increased
printer placements mean increased consumable sales, which is what drives the
printer business, especially in the color laser segment.
