Scots band cash in on U.S. photocopier ad tune
GLASGOW indie band Looper are quids in after copying firm Xerox used one of their tracks on a TV advertising campaign in the US.
The group, fronted by former Belle And Sebastian founding member Stuart David, gave permission for their 2000 single Mondo 77 to be used in the adverts screened across the US.
The track has also featured on the soundtrack to the Tom Cruise movie Vanilla Sky and German film The Edukators.
It has been aired regularly over the past three years after Xerox advertising executives picked it for its “simplicity, energy, modern style and sense of humour”.
It’s estimated Looper could have earned £500,000 in royalties from the advert.
Stuart David, who formed Looper with his wife Karn, said the track made them enough money to give them a living. But he said they had not amassed many new fans as a result of the song being used in the ads.
The band are currently without a record label, having released their last album, The Snare, on Mute after leaving their original label Jeepster after two albums, Geometrid and Up A Tree.
They are working on new songs to be released as download tracks from their intenet site.
