HP tops up commercial printing line

HP has supplemented its commercial printing line with two new Designjet models, in addition to a new MFP and a couple of new presses.

The Designjet 30 and 130 models are large-format printing, ink and media systems for photos and graphics that resist fading for 70 years.

The six-ink Designjet 30 and 130 also incorporate new media and ink cartridges that have been developed for the Designjet systems.

Allen Rothwell, commercial color category marketing manager for HP Canada, said the new offerings add depth to HP’s commercial suite.

“They fit into our family of wide-format printers,” he said.

The Designjets are targeted at three market segments: graphic designers, photographers and the pre-press user. That could include enterprises with enough in-house creative generation to have an need for lower-cost proofs and small-run outputs.

“I think the biggest focus is going to be the pro-sumer,” Rothwell said.

He said that with the new models, HP is now able to offer commercial printing options for everything from 6- to 60-inch media.

“It fills a gap we had in the product line.”

Rothwell said the new offerings may not create new markets, but could definitely add options to existing commercial printing customers.

“The market) is an extension of what we already have,” he said.

The new products will go to market through HP’s specialty channel that covers the high-end printing and photography market, he said.

“Some of those Designjet resellers now focus on photography,” he said.

“It’s opening up a new avenue for HP to move product. I’d say that this rounds out our portfolio offering for them.”

HP also announced the Indigo 3050 and 5000 presses, designed for mid- to large-size commercial printers looking to move into digital printing.

The final product announcement was the HP color 9850mfp, which is being billed as HP’s first high-speed color multifunction printer. It has been created for production color printing and copying locations in medium and large businesses, central reprographics departments, quick- printers and copy shops. HP said the new MFP is capable of printing and copying up to 50 pages per minute.

No prices have been announced for the new products.
