New Year, New Printers; Canon and HP Unveil Latest Models

If the first week is an accurate indicator, 2004 should be another busy year for the remanufacturing industry in keeping up with new printer models. Hewlett-Packard and Canon wasted little time in rolling out new printers in the new year, as both printer manufacturers recently introduced their first new models for 2004.

HP announced two additions to its small- and medium-sized business (SMB) offerings with the HP Color LaserJet 3500 and 3700 series printers. Each new 3500 and 3700 series printer comes with one print cartridge each for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. According to an HP spokesperson, the new printer cartridges can be returned to the company through HP’s Planet Partners recycling program and come equipped with the company’s Smart Chip technology.

The new HP 3500 series printers print at 12 pages per minute (ppm) for both color and black and white with a 4,000-page print cartridge yield for color and 6,000-page yield for black and white. The 3700 series prints at up to 16 ppm with a first page printout in less than 18 seconds and a page yield of 6,000 for both color and black and white. Both new series of printers use the Q2670A black print cartridge. The HP printers are making their debut at this week’s Macworld 2004 Conference and Expo in San Francisco.

Canon’s new MultiPASS MP390 multifunction printer offers printing, copying, scanning and fax capabilities and targets the small-office/home-office (SOHO) market. The MultiPASS MP390 printer has print speeds up to 18 ppm in black and up to 12 ppm in color. The MultiPASS copier can perform standalone copying of black-and-white or color documents at speeds up to 18 copies per minutes (cpm) in black and white and 12 cpm in color.
