    County firm’s green award
A major Shropshire employer has been presented with a prestigious national environmental award. Ink cartridge manufactuer Epson Telford received a Premier Award in the 2004 Business Commitment to the Environment (BCE) Awards.
Three representatives of Epson Telford – operations support manager Ray Prior, environmental management manager John Newell, and general affairs manager Ian Andrews – attended the ceremony at The Lincoln Centre in London.
Professor Howard Dalton, chief scientific adviser for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) presented the awards to the winners of the 2004 BCE Awards.
Ray Prior said: “There were nearly 100 entries to the award this year and whilst the ultimate prize, the Peter Parker Award, went to another company, to be considered to be among the top four entries was an amazing result for Epson Telford.”
The company was given the award for its sustained commitment to environmental improvement over a period of time.
This includes energy reduction of over seven per cent year on year for the last four years, zero emissions to landfill with continually increasing recycling streams, and a project to process and reuse water used in the business process, as well as commitment to the local environment through mutual support groups, school promotions and visits, and a company conservation site.
Epson Telford was judged as the best generalist company with a commitment to become a green factory.
The BCE Awards were established in 1975 to recognise businesses whose activities enhance or protect the environment. Sponsored by leading innovation company AEA Technology Environment, they are probably the world’s oldest environmental awards, with 30 years experience of showcasing environmental excellence.
The BCE Awards are acknowledged as a hallmark of success by both business and Government. They are also the only nationwide UK awards open to all sectors and technologies acting as a feeder to the biennial European Environmental Awards.
