EMPTY INK CARTRIDGES
In a recent
conversation with Chris Stoddart at EOS inc ,Tonernews.com asked some
inportant questions regarding the state of the industry .and altough
things seam “Ok” for some of the big empty collection players ,they are
actually rather slow & down in collecting empties overall troughout
the U.S.,Tonernews.com asked these important question to help you and
your business strive forward in these tuff economic times .
state of the industry on
collecting empty ctgs by Chris Stoddard @ EOS inc
TN:are
their enough to go around ?
EOS:There is not enough to go
around. Historically our issue as a recycler has always been finding
the product. Even with our 15 plus years and thousands of end user
collection programs we still fall short in finding ALL the items we need
ALL the time. Of course in being a commodity item the valuation on any
item is of course skewed towards its availability!
TN:why
is their a shortage ?
EOS:Simply because if (hypothetically) a
100 cartridges are made by a OEM for instance: 40 are sent back using
the pre paid return service, 40 are thrown out. 20 are sold or cashed
in to companies such as ours. The crux of the matter is there is a awe
full allot of cartridges consumed but the percentage that actually is
sold or recycled with companies such as ours is a small percentage.
TN:what
are the oem’s doing to stop the remanufactures/compatible
OES:The
Oem’s having a large stake in cartridge sales overall are consistent in
producing cartridge that take a certain level of knowledge and material
to successfully remanufature. That being said , we have heard over the
past year of a single use cartridge( not prebate or non prebate). This
is a cartridge that somehow would be void after its first use from the
OEM. However to date this has not happened. I think in part the
biggest hurdle to remanufacturing cartridges is having the empty to
start with. The Oem’s have a active recycling/collection program
although there is no compensation for this a large percentage of OEM
customers choose this option. In fact there has even been rumor that
the OEM’s are strategically targeting larger accounts to ensure the
empties are returned.TN:how does 2010 look for the
empties business ?
EOS:2010 is billed to be a good year but as a
recycler it will prove to be a ongoing battle to collect as many
cartridges as possible while expanding our recycling scope.
TN:how
will it change for the better or the worst ?
EOS:I think the
ongoing focus with our environment and being green can only help us
capitalize our ability to buy and recycle more cartridges.TN:what
is the impact of the industry due to the current worldwide reccesion
EOSThe
recession has infact helped our business in the sense that companies
and users are more conscious of the empty cartridge and its value,
giving us a chance to create a recycling program or buy back the
cartridge. As for the purchasing of new vs OEM I think the recession has
helped re-create a level of cost consciousness that is steering more
and more consumers towards price and you cant beat the remanufacutred
cartridge price comparatively.Thanks.
