New York Union’s Warn Photographers of Canon’s Bad Customer Service

New Camera Repair Model Hurts Photographers and Jobs, Protesters at PhotoPlus Expo 2012 Tell Attendees
NEW YORK, Oct., 2012– Photographers and Teamster-represented camera technicians protested today at the PhotoPlus Expo at the Javitz Center, warning photographers about Canon’s decision to take away local repair options for DSLR cameras. They held banners and distributed leaflets at the 2012 PhotoPlus Expo where more than 20,000 amateur and professional photographers are expected to attend the three-day event.

Protesters complained that until recently, New York photographers could drop off their Canon equipment at local repair shops and get quick, reliable service – often with same-day turnaround. Now Canon forces its customers to ship to an out-of-state facility, even for non-warranty and after-warranty damages. This often leads to frustratingly long waits, according to protesters.

Canon’s decision highlights the decline in its customer service standards – termed as "disastrously unreliable" by one enraged customer and "an expensive disappointment" by another. Canon’s move is also destroying local, skilled repair technicians’ jobs that are represented by Teamsters Local 210.

The protesters pointed out that Canon’s service policy is an inconvenience for all American photographers – not just fast-paced New Yorkers. Nikon owners, by contrast, can still choose between 20 authorized repair shops across the country, including in New York City.

"I was thinking of buying a Canon camera for my daughter this Christmas, but now I’m not so sure," said Cynthia Rivera, an amateur photographer with Teamsters Local 210.

"What’s worse, in Japan, Canon practices a much higher standard of customer care and Canon customers are free to choose between independent local service and Canon, according to their needs and convenience. This discrimination against American customers is unacceptable," said George Miranda, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 210 and Teamsters International Vice President.

As Canon and Nikon square off in the Photo Expo and in the market place, growing numbers of photographers are signing an appeal to demand that Canon rescind its current repair policy and restore photographers’ access to authorized independent local repair service.
