Wis. — Xerox Corp. has lost a tax dispute with the state of Wisconsin
involving millions of dollars of equipment leased to Milwaukee and La
Crosse.Xerox argued that the stand-alone devices that can print, copy,
fax and scan should not be subject to personal property taxes because
they should be defined as computers, which are exempt.
The 4th
District Court of Appeals on Thursday ruled that the devices are
taxable.Xerox attorney Maureen McGinnity said the company disagrees
with the ruling and is reviewing its appeal options. A spokesman for
the state Department of Justice, which defended the cities, had no
immediate comment.McGinnity said the property was valued at $8.3
million for tax purposes and Xerox was seeking a refund on $104,000
worth of taxes.
