    Copier dealership’s sales are surging

Even in an Electronic age, there’s a proliferation of paperwork.

That’s a happy fact of office life at Stewart Industries, an independent copier dealership whose sales have quadrupled over the past five years. The No. 1 seller nationwide of Savin/Ricoh products four years running, Stewart sells machines that copy on both sides, fax, scan to computer and complete numerous other office duties.

And if anything goes wrong, Stewart will send someone to fix the machine within four hours.

“Faster and easier, that’s our motto,” said Chuck Cahn, president of the family-owned company.

Last year, Stewart did more than $20 million in sales and service, compared with $5.4 million in 1998. Cahn’s formula for success was to mold a company with little bureaucracy, investing instead in a top- notch work force.

“We’d rather have great salespeople and tech engineers than a whole bunch of managers,” he said
