    In-Stat/MDR Reports Microfluidics Making a Splash Outside of Inkjet Printing

    SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The field of microfluidics, Which deals with the moving of minute amounts of fluids through simple or complex arrays of channels, nozzles, pumps, valves, and needles, is finding its way into applications beyond inkjet printing, reports In-Stat/MDR (http://www.instat.com). From automotive hydraulics, semiconductor production, and new means of drug delivery, to next-generation, propellant-free aerosols and fuel cells for consumer electronics, microfluidics technologies are on the move and continue to expand their reach. Excluding lab-on-a-chip, revenues for microfluidics are forecast by the high-tech market research firm to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.3%, from nearly $1.7 billion in 2003, to more than $2.7 billion in 2008.

    “The need to precisely control the movement of fluid at the micro scale has become increasingly important over the past two decades.     – Inkjet printing remains the dominant source of revenue and unit shipments for this unique MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) category.

    – With the exception of computing, all other markets are only just beginning to embrace microfluidics technology. Even so, several do have considerable potential — most notably automotive and consumer — provided the devices being developed for those segments can be brought to market in a cost-effective manner.

    – Nozzles are currently the overwhelming kings of the microfluidics segment, followed very distantly by valves, pumps, and needles, respectively. Given the continued strong growth prospects in the broader applications of inkjet printing, this will change very little over the next 5 years.
