    Canon to make pharmaceuticals,DNA chips

TOKYO-Japanese copier and printer manufacturer Canon Inc will branch out into the
pharmaceutical business, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Monday.

its shareholder meeting slated for Wednesday, the firm will revise its corporate
charter so that its operations include the “manufacturing and sales of
    pharmaceutical products”.

Canon is developing a new system for the mass
production of DNA chips, which uses the inkjet technology that is employed in
    its printers.

In the new method, DNA solution is sprayed on a glass
slide in the same way that drops of ink are sprayed on a sheet of paper. This
enables mass production of DNA chips in a simpler and less expensive manner than
the currently available technology that synthesizes DNA on the glass slide.

According to Canon officials, DNA chips will be used to diagnose cancer
and infectious diseases. They said it will take a while before Canon will be
able to come up with products using DNA chips, but the company seeks to develop
the pharmaceutical business into a major source of income. Canon has logged a
record net profit every year since 2000.
