Ireland’s Tonergate Politician Repays Ink Cartridge Dept
Sinn Féin TD Aengus O Snodaigh has repaid the €3000 bill he owed over the use of ink cartridges during his time in office.However it emerged yesterday that his party’s print usage now trails that of its rivals.
New figures for 2011 show that the biggest spend on expensive printer cartridges was by Fine Gael. It spent €41,407, followed by Labour (€34,463), Fianna Fail (€32,074), Independents/Socialist Party (€17,080) and then Sinn Fein (€16,338).
Mr O Snodaigh sent a cheque for €3,286.07 yesterday to the Oireachtas Commission to pay a bill dating back two years for exceeding the printer cartridge limits. He has refused to repay the hefty €50,000 which was the cost of the print cartridges he claimed in 2007-2008.
Those cartridges were used before the new rule on the limits of use came into place, and O Snodaigh claims that they were used for a legitimate purpose, through the printing of posters and flyers.
TDs are now limited to using €2,000 worth of printer cartridges per year. Since the new limits were introduced in 2009, the cost has almost halved from €338,201 in 2007 to €181,011 last year.“I notice the deputy’s interest in loans. I would think Deputy O Snodaigh and Deputy Adams might go to the Northern Bank and get a loan for the old toner cartridges,” Enda Kenny said in the Dail yesterday.
