Canon To Invest Y100 Billion In Next-Generation Stepper Development |
 |
Canon Inc. said Monday that it plans to invest about Y100 billion up to December 2005 for the development and commercialization of next-generation semiconductor steppers.
The planned spending equates to more than Y30 billion in R&D spending a year on semiconductor steppers in three years. This compares with Y260 billion the firm’s entire R&D spending planned for this fiscal year.
The move reflects Canon’s ambition to become the world’s leading stepper maker. The Japanese company now ranks the third behind ASML Holding N.V. of the Netherlands and Japan’s Nikon Corp.
