    Copy, scan, print

It used To be that when summer ended and students headed back to class, they needed nothing much more than a few books, a three-ring binder and some sharpened No. 2 pencils. But these days, back-to-school shopping includes ever more high-tech tools.

Enter the multitasking SCX-4100 from Samsung, an all-in-one black-and-white laser printer, digital copier and colour scanner.

The machine has 8MB of memory, which allows for printing and copying speeds of up to 14 pages per minute. It prints and copies with a resolution of 600 dots per inch and can produce colour scans at 4,800 dots per inch.

The paper cassette has a 250-sheet capacity, and the machine can handle a number of paper sizes and types, including card stock and transparencies. Compatible with Windows and Linux (but not Macintosh), it is available through on-line and brick-and-mortar retailers for around $200 (U.S.). More detail, including specifications, is at color=#0000ffwww.samsungusa.com.

Useful features include poster printing and USB and parallel ports. The device's small footprint — it is 16.6 inches wide by 15.8 deep — and a sensing feature for the multiple ports that allows two users to print at the same time make the SCX-4100 a handy solution for both cramped dormitories and good roommate relations.
