Recycling Empties for Ink Tech in Connecticut

LOCKPORT, Nov  2011– It is estimated that over 700 million ink cartridges and toner are used every year in the United States. While a very small fraction are recycled across the country, the amount recycled in the Town of Lockport could go up thanks to a new business.

Ink Tech, which opened last month, will take old ink cartridges and toner and make them like new. That’s not by refilling them, but rather remanufacturing them. The cartridges are inspected, cleaned, filled with ink and sealed then packaged. A remanufactured cartridge is just like new, expect at a cheaper price, and much more reliable than a refilled one.

"It’s much better than just refilling them," said Jeff Heitzenrater, who runs Ink Tech with Mike Szatkowski and his uncle Joseph Bujalski.

Heitzenrater and Szatkowski both worked for Office Max, providing them with the experience they would need for Ink Tech. The firm offers all kinds of ink cartridges and toner, all of which have been made in the United States. They will also take old cartridges, either to remanufacture or to recycle them.

"It really is a green business," Bujalski said.
Heitzenrater said Ink Tech offers office supplies, as well, at a lower price, something customers will appreciate during back-to-school time. People can also do small orders of faxing or printing.

The green aspect of the business is something Ink Tech shares with its neighbor, Fast Cash Bottle & Can Redemption Center. The center does what its name says, takes bottles and cans for cash right away.

Ink Tech also offers virus removal and website design as well. Szatkowski has a strong computer background, as he is also working on Ink Tech’s website, which when completed will allow customers to buy online. For now, people can either contact Ink Tech by phone at 434-3212 or stop by the firm at 5714 South Transit Road in the Home Depot Plaza, behind Dunkin Donuts. Ink Tech is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
