Ink Cartridge Theft Ring Busted in California

Three California men have been charged in a multi-state, ink cartridge theft ring.

The suspects, all Los Angeles residents, are accused of stealing thousands of dollars in ink cartridges from Utah stores with the intention of selling them in California.

Police were reportedly tipped off in January 2011 by an Office Depot security officer who led the authorities to the trio:

        Julio Pena, 55
        Ronaldo Reyes, 44
        Mauricio Espinosa-Rojas, 41

A search of suspects’ car GPS system determined that vehicle had stopped at Office Max and Office Depot locations throughout Utah.

Pena, who reportedly claimed to be the driver for the two other men, said he was "pretty sure" they were stealing, but allegedly told police he didn’t care because they were paying him $100 per day for his services.

Officials from Office Max report that more than $10,000 worth of ink was stolen from their stores alone.

Theft charges were filed this week in Salt Lake City.
