HP Resolves Ink Cartridge Patent Infringement Lawsuit With Brazil’s Multilaser
HP announced that it has amicably resolved patent litigation with Brazil-based Multilaser Industrial Ltda. relating to HP’s integrated print head inkjet cartridges. As part of the settlement, Multilaser acknowledges that HP’s patents are valid and were infringed upon. Multilaser has agreed to stop selling the cartridges in question in Brazil and in other countries where HP has corresponding patent rights. Multilaser will also reimburse part of the litigation costs to HP.

More Companies Reach Agreement in Canon Suit
Since January 23, 2012, when Canon filed a complaint with the US ITC alleging that more than 30 companies violated Section 336 of the Tariff Act of 1930, concerning certain photosensitive drums sold for use in Canon and Hewlett-Packard laser beam printers, several of the proposed respondents have agreed to consent judgments and permanent injunctions. On May 24, Canon announced that resolutions had been reached with seven more companies, including Dexxxon Digital Storage, Inc.; Discount Office Items, Inc.; Deal Express LLC; GreenLine Paper Company, Inc.; Myriad Greeyn LLC; Office World, Inc. and OfficeWorld.com, Inc. Although many respondents have reached agreements, the impacts of this lawsuit on the aftermarket industry are still looming.

India HCP Market Achieves Double-Digit Growth in 1Q12
According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the hard copy peripherals (HCP) market in India registered a recovery in 1Q12 and stood at 834,134 units, recording a sequential quarterly growth of 12.6 percent and a year-on-year growth of 7.4 percent. The inkjet HCP market grew by 19.9 percent compared to 4Q11 and marginally by 1.5 percent compared to the same period in 2011. The laser HCP (printer-based) market witnessed a growth of 11.6 percent compared to 4Q11 and a growth of 18.9 percent compared to the same period in 2011. HP continued to dominate the HCP market with a market share of 48.8 percent.
