Ricoh USA Inc. has reached settlements in two legal cases involving its 401(k) retirement plan. The lawsuits, filed in Pennsylvania federal court, accused the company of mishandling employee retirement funds in violation of federal regulations.

The first case involved claims that Ricoh improperly forfeited employees’ vested 401(k) balances, potentially denying them funds they were entitled to after leaving the company. The second lawsuit alleged that Ricoh’s 401(k) plan charged excessive fees, leading to unnecessary reductions in employees’ retirement savings.

In both cases, Ricoh agreed to settlements designed to resolve the disputes without going to trial. The terms of the settlements, which still need approval from federal judges, could include financial compensation for affected employees and changes to the company’s retirement plan management practices. These settlements underscore the ongoing scrutiny of corporate 401(k) plans and their fiduciary responsibility to employees. Companies are required to manage employee retirement funds in the best interest of participants, and failure to do so can result in costly legal challenges.
