Ricoh and Hitachi are joining forces with other Japanese technology and manufacturing companies to transform electric vehicle (EV) battery production through low-cost modular battery plants. The initiative aims to develop factory systems built from standardized, container-sized modules, potentially reducing battery plant equipment and construction costs by around 70% while shortening the time needed to build new facilities. The companies are developing the concept through Swiftfab Energy Systems, a joint venture involving nine Japanese firms, with the goal of making EV battery manufacturing more flexible and competitive. By combining Ricoh’s manufacturing and digital technologies with Hitachi’s industrial expertise, the project could help battery makers expand production capacity more quickly and respond to growing global demand for electric vehicles. The modular approach is also intended to improve production efficiency and lower the financial barriers associated with conventional large-scale battery factories, positioning Ricoh and Hitachi as important technology partners in the next generation of EV battery manufacturing.
