On May 9, Canon employees along with members
from Enforcers of Intellectual Property Rights (EIPR) and the crime branch
conducted a citywide raid to nab makers of counterfeit Canon cartridges. They
seized fake printer cartridges worth Rs 12 lakh from a manufacturing unit at
Veera Desai Road.
Speaking about the raids, Zahir Khan, managing director
of EIPR, says, “Canon Inc appointed our investigating and enforcement firm to
deal with the problem.
We had been planning a raid against counterfeit
Canon cartridge makers in the city for a month now. We targetted both retailers
and manufacturers. We confiscated goods worth Rs 25 lakh in the citywide raids.”
Adds Khan, “With the advent of technology, counterfeiters are now
capable of duplicating even the minutest details — such as barcodes, holograms,
security tags and packaging.”
He explains that people using these
cartridges were bound to face problems. “The counterfeiters were using crude
methods to refill very dirty and toxic ink in the cartridges,” reveals
Khan.
The culprits were arrested under Section 51 / 63 of the Copyrights
Act 1957, Sections 103/104 of the Trademark Act 1999 and Section 420 of the
Indian Penal Code (cheating).
