Epson predicts technology advances for 2013

Daniel Rafferty, sales manager for Ireland at Epson, predicts the technology advances coming down the track in 2013, and how they could influence your office environment

1. Meetings will become child’s play

According to Gartner, by 2015, 40pc of ‘Global 1000’ organisations will use gamification – the use of game-playing in a work environment to help solve business problems – as the primary mechanism to transform business operations. While it may be some time before dealing with your inbox resembles Angry Birds, it can be relatively simple to introduce this type of approach into certain meetings and training sessions, where an element of fun helps lift proceedings and capture everyone’s attention.

That’s why I think we’ll see greater use of interactive projectors in meetings in 2013. These can now be used to turn any flat surface into a large interactive display, with interactive pens digitally capturing any notes made on the surface.
With an ever-increasing drive to boost Irish productivity and overcome our productivity gap, output counts, and efficiency is key. Using interactive tools in the boardroom will be vital for eliminating time-wasting and redundancy for the service businesses that make up so much of the economic output of Ireland.

2. More engaging presentations

We’re all pretty accustomed to seeing films in 3D now, but this technology is yet to make its mark in the workplace. With 3D projectors now available for business, video content in business presentations could really get a lift in 2013. Last year, a study found that people are 29pc more attentive when watching a 3D film than a 2D version so it will be interesting to see how much more engaging business presentations and training can become with 3D capabilities.

3. Wearable technology will make its debut in the office

Wearable technology that allows you to watch digital content in privacy while being aware of your surroundings – could make its appearance in the office and on the commute to work for the first time in 2013.

Innovations such as the Epson Moverio glasses and Google’s Glasses allow people to enter an immersive digital environment wherever they are. As well as giving people the chance to switch off totally on the commute to work, we could also see this technology having practical applications in the workplace. These could include training – briefing a group in a virtual reality scenario, in manufacturing and retail for presenting new products and exploring their features in an engaging way, or in tourism for helping to sell a traveller their dream holiday. In fact, Gartner has predicted that wearable smart electronics in shoes, ‘tattoos’ and accessories will in itself emerge as a $10bn industry by 2016, so this really is one to watch.

4. Inkjet will triumph over laser printing

As demand for greater efficiency continues over the coming 12 months, we’re confident that more and more businesses will move to inkjet printers, ditching their laser options, when they realise the compelling cost savings, greater energy efficiency and better quality which inkjet can offer to businesses. And with Gartner reporting that 2013 will see mobiles overtake PCs as the most common web access device worldwide, it is likely we’ll see the complete integration of mobile printing into daily business operations; with more retailers moving to mobile receipt printing and service businesses moving to remote document printing.
