67,000 Counterfeit HP Products Seized in Saudi Arabia

    By JEDDAH

April 2013 Hewlett-Packard, the major manufacturer of computer equipment, launched a campaign against fake products in the Middle East which resulted in the seizure of 67,000 of those fake products in Saudi Arabia alone.

The campaign was launched with the cooperation of authorities in the Kingdom and involved confiscating fake products and closing down illegal plants. The products included fake printer components and printing supplies, containers, adapters and other manufacturing equipment.

Police raided a number of showrooms and warehouses that were used for inventory and sales, which resulted in seizing 55,000 containers of fake ink for HP printers and more than 5,000 fake adapters for laptops. Authorities also confiscated equipment used for manufacturing these fake products in a move that was a major step in combating counterfeit products.

“We are proud to have accomplished this mission, which involved extensive investigation that led to these raids,” said Jeff Isles, an anti-counterfeiting official at Hewlett-Packard (HP). The company would continue to support the work of local authorities and their efforts to protect customers from fraud and the illegal activities of counterfeiting organizations, he said.

Expressing HP’s commitment to work with local law enforcement authorities, he said: “We aim to stop the illegal activities of counterfeiting organizations. The low quality of their products will not fool customers and can cause serious damage to printers, as well as the environment, as it contains unknown chemicals.”
Previous campaigns launched in the UAE were also very successful and resulted in the confiscation of more than 230,000 fake products.

These raids are expected to have implications on the widespread availability of fake products in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Over the past four years, HP has extensively investigated the production of counterfeit products in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, which resulted in filing more than 800 cases of legal action such as raids, detention by authorities in these parts of the world and the confiscation of about nine million fake products.

Isles said that that through its anti-counterfeiting department, HP works hard to educate customers and partners to be aware and capable of distinguishing counterfeit printing supplies. It also cooperates with local and international authorities to detect illegal operations and dismantle the organizations that produce fake printing components and supplies.
