Phone scam targets those with Penn State Purchasing Cards
January
2009 Penn State Purchasing Services recently has become aware of a very
active toner scam going on at this time. The way the scam works is that
a sales representative calls and tells the cardholder that the price on
toner will be going up in the near future. The caller then faxes a
“contract” which he or she wants the cardholder to sign and fax back.
The “contract” calls for the cardholder’s address and phone number as
well as the make and model of the copier.Anyone who receives any calls
similar to the above situation are instructed not to give the caller
any information or sign any contract. This is a scam often referred to
as a “toner phoner.”
