According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, the worldwide hardcopy peripherals market declined 4.5 percent year over year in the fourth quarter of 2011 (4Q11) on shipments of 34.9 million units. For the full year 2011, the global market experienced year-over-year growth of 0.7 percent, with shipments approaching 126 million units. The color laser market continues to show growth in the overall hardcopy peripherals market. This segment increased 7 percent year over year to more than 1.9 million units shipped in 4Q11. As color continues to penetrate the overall hardcopy market, the MFP market is weathering the current economy better than its single-function counterparts. More products continue to make the transition toward multifunction, posting a 17 percent year-over-year increase compared to a 1 percent decline for single-function printers.
Epson America introduced its next generation of 64-inch solvent printer – the EPSON SureColor S30670. The device is a four-color (CMYK) solvent printer leveraging new EPSON UltraChrome GS2 solvent-based ink technology. It also utilizes an entirely new print engine featuring Epson’s MicroPiezo TFP print head to deliver droplet sizes as small as 4.2 picoliters and double the nozzle density of Epson’s previous solvent printer for "extremely fast print speeds," the company’s statement said.
Toshiba America Business Solutions announced the introduction of its new e-STUDIO 556/656/756/856 series. The new MFP series features a patented, built-in 256-bit AES self-encrypting drive (SED) for the utmost in document and data security. The SED technology features automatic drive invalidation that renders the hard drive useless if removed and installed into another device. Data overwrite comes standard as well to meet Department of Defense requirements by immediately writing over any data stored on the hard drive during document processing. These features have earned the new e-STUDIO series a Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level rating of three (EAL3).
Fuji Xerox launched the Phaser 6700, “the highest resolution color printer in its class,” the company’s statement said, with 1,200-by-2,400-dpi resolution. The device features Color by Words technology – a new color-matching program that enables users to fine-tune colors. By selecting from a menu of words, such as “red apple,” “blue sky” or “green grass,” users can refine the colors they desire.
