The Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society received a $5,000 grant and planted 255 trees in the Stoney Creek Valley Sept. 22.

Volunteers and city staff met at the Stoney Creek Centre to plant the trees, which were purchased with the grant.

The money came from Canon Canada’s Take Root program, presented by Evergreen, Which is a national tree planting initiative.

After the grant was received the Camrose Green Action committee also donated $1,000. Bringing the total to $6,000, allowing the city to plant the trees.

“We are very excited to receive this funding for reforestation and further greening our Stony Creek Valley,” said Chris Clarkson, parks director for the City of Camrose. “It is always wonderful when community involvement and concern for our environment come together. We extend our sincere thanks to Canon, Evergreen – and the Take Root Program, the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society, and the Green Action Committee for making this initiative possible.”

There had been some beaver damage identified in the valley and so the new trees were planted just below the Stoney Creek Centre, in the hopes of restoring those areas.

Clarkson also took a moment to recognize the efforts of Stewardship Society coordinator Stacey Rempel.

“I would like to thank Stacey, she had the initiative to go and apply for the grant from Canon,” he said. “It is always really important that we can get this kind of sponsorship from the corporate sector and it is a good partnership for the City of Camrose to be involved.”

Mayor Marshall Chalmers hosted a meet and greet coffee time for the volunteers beforehand and praised those who showed up for helping out.

“Thank you to everybody for coming out and continuing to enhance this valley,” Chalmers said. “We get so many great comments about this valley and how we need to keep it up.”

Canon’s Take Root Program, presented by Evergreen, will provide a $5,000 grant and a PowerShot digital camera to 30 local groups across Canada every year for the next three years. Canon’s Take Root Program aims to add more than 7,500 trees to the Canadian urban landscape annually and encourage community engagement in public spaces through native tree-planting events, invasive-species removal and other community stewardship, monitoring and developmental activities.

“Sustainable urban greening happens when deeply committed community groups across Canada take action to naturalize urban spaces,” said Geoff Cape, executive director, Evergreen. “Evergreen is pleased to be able to direct funding and support to where it can make the most effective change.”
