Canon Chairman F. Mitarai Expects Prolonged European Crisis

The following are highlights from a recent interview with Fujio Mitarai, chairman and chief executive officer of canon inc. and a former chairman of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren). During the interview, Mitarai expressed his opinion that economic stagnation in Europe will continue for some time.

The Yomiuri Shimbun: What will happen with the crisis in Europe?

Fujio Mitarai: Financial reconstruction came too late in southern European countries [such as Greece, Portugal, Italy and Spain], and long-term interest rates are rising. If European banks holding national bonds pull financing out of Asia, growth in Asia may also slow down.

The economic stagnation in Europe will probably be prolonged, and the pace of economic recovery in the United States will also be subdued.

Q: What do you predict for the Japanese economy?

A: If reconstruction [from the March 11 disaster] gets fully under way from around spring, it will spearhead economic recovery. However, the strong yen may continue for two to three years.

There are many problems, including electricity shortages and high corporate taxes. We can’t expect ever-improving prosperity.

Q: There also are a great many issues to be dealt with involving government policy.

A: Social security costs will keep growing due to the continued graying of Japanese society. The government must pass important legislation, such as bills related to increasing the consumption tax rate, to achieve integrated reform of the social security and taxation systems. The ruling and opposition parties must think of the national good and solve these difficult problems.

Q: What are your business plans at Canon?

A: We depend a great deal on Europe. This year we’ll strive to develop new products and create sales channels in the Middle East and Russia. We’re also considering acquiring companies that are strong in areas such as industrial robots and medical services.
