CANON FILES SUIT AGAINST DEALER OF TONER CARTRIDGE KNOCKOFFS
    TOKYO,
Jun  2008 — Canon Inc.  is taking legal action against a wholesaler in
Tokyo it alleges is importing and selling counterfeits of its
products.A suit, filed in the Tokyo District Court, seeks an injunction
against the company, as well as compensation for losses. The fakes,
which include toner cartridges for printers, began appearing in
2006.Canon says it warned the wholesaler, demanding that it stop
peddling the bogus goods and reveal its sources, but decided to resort
to a lawsuit because the company was uncooperative. As part of broader
efforts to fight counterfeiting, Canon is working with authorities in
China, Europe and the U.S. to identify factories where fakes are made.
Some 387 incidences of counterfeiting of Canon products were found in
2007.Damages from counterfeiting cost it several tens of billions of
    yen a year, Canon says.
