Canon Looks to Add Big 3rd Party Parts Maker to Toner Bottle Complaint
Canon has never been shy about suing third-party supplies vendors to protect its toner cartridge and toner bottle intellectual property, having launched successful suits against GCC Group and GCC distributor TallyGenicom, Densigraphix, Polek & Polek, Copylite, and more recently Ninestar companies and distributors (see 337-TA-731 and Canon v. Ninestar [2010]). But in 2012, Canon is aiming higher.

No longer content with injunctions and consent orders, Canon recently filed a patent-infringement complaint before the U.S. International Trade Commission that named more than 30 companies, including third-party supplies giant Clover Holdings (see “Reman Nightmare Realized: Canon Sues Dozens Over Infringing Gear”). Canon is looking for a general exclusion order that would bar the importation of drums and all-in-one cartridges containing them that use an infringing drive component or gear. Now, Canon is taking more aggressive action in another, less widely publicized patent-infringement complaint—its suit against Color Imaging, UniNet Imaging, and UI Supplies related to a toner bottle design.
