Canon Taiwan opens new factory in Chiayi

Japanese multinational imaging and optical giant Canon inaugurated yesterday a new two-floor production plant in Taiwan’s Chiayi County , marking a new step forward for Canon Inc., Taiwan, but also presenting a golden opportunity for a region located in southwestern Taiwan.

Spanning 47,945 square meters, the high-tech building has a current staff of 1,100 and the company optimistically estimates a growth to 2,000 members by the end of this year. Within two years, the factory could bring in a total of 4,000 job opportunities locally, thanks to a second building to be built adjacent to the main plant.

The sustained growth of the global digital SLR camera market in recent years has led to a rapidly increasing demand for cameras with interchangeable lenses, which has created a pressing need for Canon to expand production capacity.

Canon Inc., Taiwan reached record-high revenue last year, earning approximately NT$34 billion. This year the company is expecting NT$45 billion in revenue, prompting it to expand its presence on the island. The new plant will specialize in manufacturing Canon’s latest digital SLR cameras, such as the EOS 600D and EOS 1100D.

The Canon Chiayi Factory is the company’s second manufacture site in Taiwan — after Taichung — and the first case of an overseas land purchase and factory construction by the Japanese company. With great assistance from the Chiayi County Government, the construction was completed after a record-breaking nine months.

To mark the occasion, the inauguration ceremony was attended by President Yoshida Kenji of Canon Inc., Taiwan and Managing Director and Chief Executive Masaya Maeda of Image Communication Products Operations, Canon Inc., as well as Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Francis Liang and Chiayi County Magistrate Helen Chang Hua-guan.

Magistrate Chang has high hopes that Chiayi people will not only be able to return home, but that the county will become a central base for the optical industry in Taiwan in the near future. To support these recent developments, the county government plans to promote Canon cameras and capture the county’s beautiful scenery by sponsoring annual photography competitions.
