09 — Canon Inc., the Japan’s largest office-equipment maker, delayed
construction of a toner- cartridge factory, citing a drop in demand as
a result of the economic downturn. The company originally scheduled to
start operations at the factory, in Oita, southern Japan, in September,
Tokyo-based Canon said in a statement on its Web site today.
The
startup was then put back a further six months to March 2010, the
company said in November. It hasn’t decided when operations will begin
and the decision will not affect the 152 employees already hired for
the plant, Canon said today.Canon rose 2 percent to 3,090 yen as of the
11 a.m. trading break on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The benchmark Nikkei
225 Stock Average gained 2.9 percent
