    China’s Oem Printer Market drops 6.5% Year-Over-Year

After transitory resilience in 2010, the printer market in China experienced weak demand and a fall in output in 2011 and H1 2012 as a result of the economic slowdown. Chinese printer market was depressed in 2012, and its output dropped 6.5% year-over-year to 38.55 million units from January to July 2012.

Concerning competitive landscape, Chinese printer market is basically occupied by foreign brands like HP, Epson and Canon. In 2012, the manufacturers adjusted the development strategy of their printer business in a market downturn. HP merges its printer business division with other divisions to reduce spending. Lexmark sells its inkjet printer business and pools resources to develop managed print services for transformation. Canon expands its layout of printer products in China and plans to make the printer business another pillar after camera business.

In 2011, HP held a market share of more than 40% in the printer industry, but witnessed a sliding trend in operating results of printer business. In the first three quarters of FY2012, the revenue of HP’s Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) fell by 3% YoY to USD18.407 billion.

Lexmark has carried out a number of acquisitions to underpin its printer business in the past few years. But in the context of plunging price of laser printer and increasingly intensifying market competition, the company’s inkjet printer business and overall business showed poor performance. In H1 2012, the revenue of Lexmark registered USD1.977 billion, down 4.9% YoY. Lexmark decided to sell its inkjet printer business in August 2012 and will focus on high-end imaging products in the years to come.

Shandong New Beiyang Information Technology, which commits itself to the production of special printer, made revenue of RMB288 million in H1 2012. Its dedicated printer project which is under construction and boasts annual capacity of 500,000 units is expected to realize full capacity in 2013.

In 2010, Zhuhai Seine Technology, a manufacturer of toner cartridge for laser printer, launched Pantum laser printer, China’s first laser printer with proprietary intellectual property rights. The company basically completed the layout of product line in 2011. It has entered Australia, the Middle East and Russia, etc., and plans to tap into the markets in Western Europe and North America in H2 2012.
