    Clones Attack Czech Consumables Market

Prague, April 28, 2014 – The consumables market in the Czech Republic declined by 2.1% in unit terms, and by 4.9% in value in H2 2013 compared to H2 2012. According to market research company IDC, cheap compatible consumables — both inkjet and toner — drove the Czech consumables market volume in the second half of 2013.

On the total consumable market, inkjet consumables shipments decreased 4.9% in H2 2013, while laser consumables volumes went up 2.0% in the same period compared to H2 2012.

In the inkjet market, original shipments declined by 9.6% year on year in H2 2013, while the aftermarket grew 1.2% by volume in the same period. In the laser segment, original toner shipments fell 1.9%, while sales of aftermarket toners grew 6.6% year on year in the second half of 2013.

"Both the ink and toner markets were heavily influenced by growing imports of cheap compatible consumables from Asia, which push down prices across the board," says Tomas Hoda, research manager at IDC. "Also, clones are becoming a serious problem in the Czech market, impacting both original vendors and traditional local remanufacturers. End users, especially in low-end hardcopy device segments, still consider price ahead of quality, and do not consider total cost of ownership and other factors. The market is very price sensitive, and many consumers simply buy the cheapest products. Original and local compatible vendors find it hard to defend themselves; these cheap, new-built compatibles are imported directly from Asia, and are not illegal."

Clones are new-built compatible consumables, with a design very close to that of the original products. They use non-original cartridge cores and other components, and the average price is much lower than the average compatible price. Clones are detrimental in two respects; not only they are difficult to distinguish from original products, and thus damage overall market value, but they are also not typically refilled as empties or recycled, and thus contribute to waste.

Color toners still drove the market, thanks to an increasing color laser installed base. The color toner market grew 9.1% in unit terms in H2 2013 compared with H2 2012, while monochrome toners stagnated in the same period. In H2 2013, sales of color compatible consumables grew much faster than shipments of color original consumables, with the former becoming widely used in both the private and public sectors.
