FundingFactory Announces Second Annual ‘Recycling Rumble’ Winners
Winning schools and nonprofits earn fundraising bonus; top recycler overall receives Apple® iPad®.Erie, Pa. May 29, 2013 More than 1,146 total participants nationwide vied for the Top Recycler title during the “Recycling Rumble,” a friendly one-on-one recycling competition hosted annually by FundingFactory ®. From February 13 to April 30, FundingFactory participants competed to recycle the largest quantity of electronic waste (e-waste).
FundingFactory, the nation’s largest fundraising by recycling program for schools and nonprofits, matched competing participants according to their comparable recycling rate. Throughout the competition, participants collected and shipped e-waste – used inkjet and toner cartridges, cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras and GPS devices – to FundingFactory. Participants earned one point for each qualifying item redeemable for cash or new technology.
573 winning schools and nonprofits overcame their opponents in each rumble match-up, earning a 25 percent fundraising bonus. The top recycler overall, Manteca High School of Manteca, Calif., recycled 6,535 items and will receive a new Apple® iPad®. Other top recyclers include St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School of Mobile, Ala., (4,656 items), Green Vision Inc. of Randolph, N.J., (4,190 items), Learning Tree of Brooksville, Fla. (3,526 items) and Thornebrooke Elementary Parent Teacher Organization of Ocoee, Fla. (3,106 items).
Collectively, these top five recyclers raised more than $18,000 for their organizations in less than two months and saved 22,013 recyclable items from landfills. In total, Recycling Rumble participants raised $148,305 and prevented 217,524 items from being deposited into landfills.
“Our school made the ‘Recycling Rumble’ a community effort, fostering some great collaboration to collect as much e-waste as possible,” said Michelle Halla, classified technology support at Manteca High School. “With the money raised, our classrooms will be able to stay stocked with supplies. This makes a significant difference for our teachers since they have small budgets allocated for these materials. It’s rewarding and feels good to be able to help the teachers through FundingFactory’s Recycling Rumble contest.”
“Everyone loves a little friendly competition, and the ‘Recycling Rumble’ offers just that,” said Sean Michaels, president of FundingFactory. “Between the one-on-one recycling match-up and the community involvement, the contest is a spirited way for schools to earn money. Additionally, most people are familiar with recycling the basics: plastic, paper and glass. This competition engages students and communities to recycle products that aren’t always on people’s minds, resulting in a greater awareness of recycling programs in the community.
