Commission Destroys Fake HP Products in Dar Tanzania

    By Felix Andrew
Fair Competition Commission (FCC) has destroyed fake HP products with a street value of 270m/- in an exercise carried out on Wednesday at the Pugu Kinyamwezi dump in Dar es Salaam.

The products were forfeited from 10 retail shops at the city’s central business during inspection conducted between November 2012 and February this year.

FCC Head of Communication unit Frank Mdimi said 3,532 pieces of cartridge, 358 pieces of tonner, 115 pieces of ink and 95 pieces of empty packing materials, all marked HP brand, were destroyed.
“These goods worth over 270m/- were confiscated from various traders in Dar es Salaam only,” he said.

He mentioned the shops as Mohammed Abbas, Peter Marim, Mboki Mwaipiana, Mohamed Ten Co Ltd, Merali Munawar, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, Hozaiph Abdulrasul, Zahir Panjwan, Kirama General Suppliers, and Ali Mohamed.

Mdimi said good co-operation between FCC and officials of International Corporate Research (ICR) of Cyprus has enabled arrest of the culprits.

“ICR has been contracted by the genuine brand owner HP to inspect its products worldwide, and we have been doing the operation in collaboration with them,” he said. He warned unscrupulous businesspersons who continue importing counterfeit products that they would face severe penalties.

He said FCC is set to ensure that Tanzanian market is not turned into a dumping suite of substandard goods and would like all traders to conduct their businesses according to the country’s laws and regulations.

Mdimi admitted that the importation of counterfeit products has decreased because of the sensitization campaigns undertaken by the commission. It was not immediately established how many unfaithful traders were fined, but since 2007, the commission confiscated various fake goods worth 3.8bn/- countrywide.

Gideon Chilambo, the owner of the dismantling machine, said he has been doing the job for the past five years.

“We have been destroying various products such as mobile phones using state-of-the-art technology which does not pollute the environment,” he said.
He said he expects to install another plant which would destroy all products, including harmful chemicals.

“Unido (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) has already agreed to support us, and we expect to have the building within three months,” Chilambo said.
