tech firms, alleging LCD cartelDell Inc.
confirmed Monday that it has sued five Japanese electronics suppliers
for price-fixing on the liquid crystal display panels they sold to Dell
for use in its computers.The companies named as defendants in the
price-fixing suit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco,
were Sharp Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Toshiba Corp. and Seiko Epson, all of
Japan; and HannStar, of Taiwan.
Dell does not claim specific
damages in the lawsuit, said company spokesman David Frink, but it says
it spend billions of dollars on LCD panels for use in laptop computers
and in monitors for desktop computers since 1996. Dell is the world’s
third largest maker of personal computers.“We are seeking to collect
damages for LCDs sold to Dell at inflated prices,” Frink said. “We
believe we will be successful in recovering damages.”Frink noted that
the U.S. Justice Department has successfully sued several of the
suppliers named in the Dell lawsuit for price fixing in the past two
years, collecting $860 million in combined fines.
