How Non-Genuine Cartridges Can Cost You More

Everyone likes to cut costs and save money when possible, however, using low-cost and non-genuine ink and toner cartridges will jeopardize the reliability, efficiency and longevity of your Samsung printer. Samsung Insights notes that tests performed by Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI), an independent research organization, determined that up to 47 percent of non-genuine toners failed during their lifetimes, whereas genuine Samsung toner had no printer failures or errors used under the same conditions. Samsung Insights also states that there are also hidden costs to consider when you compare non-genuine toners with genuine Samsung Toner. For example, non-genuine toners can cause a number of printing failures, including damage to the printer. According to the BLI test results, issues can vary from major image-quality defects and memory chip failures, to toner flaking and excessive printer noise, resulting in costly repairs and part replacements. Based on gathered data, the total cost of genuine Samsung toner is about 30 percent less than the total cost of non-genuine toners.

An independent test conducted by BLI showed that non-genuine toner produced roughly half the yield of genuine Samsung toner. Secondly, when non-genuine toners are used, there is a 42 percent increase in the possibility of printers needing service due the relatively large diameter of the toner powder particles. Lastly, reprint costs are significantly higher. Non-genuine toners contain used parts, leading to a 47 percent chance of a printer failure, opposed to the zero percent chance with genuine Samsung toners recorded in the BLI study.

How to Determine a Non-Genuine Cartridge

Toner cartridges sold through third-party retailers, auction websites, and non-authorized retailers are most likely refurbished, refilled or counterfeit. Taking a closer look at the product you are buying will help prevent you from buying damaging goods.

When examining a toner or ink cartridge before purchasing, confirm that both the cartridge and packing carry the Samsung logo. Make sure that neither the cartridge nor the packaging is labeled “refurbished” or “reconditioned.” Refurbished or reconditioned toner is not guaranteed to work with Samsung printers. If it is not labeled as such, diligently check for any physical damage on the outer plastic case. For example, you might find damaged screws, visible use of adhesives or surface scratches. Be certain to check that the cartridge has a CRUM (Customer Replaceable Unit Monitor) chip. If it does not, it’s either a starter cartridge or counterfeit. Be sure that the cartridge has a Samsung model and serial number label. If you’re using a Samsung network printer, type the printer’s IP address into any Web browser. This will load Samsung’s SyncThru Web service, which will tell you whether your cartridge is genuine.
