The Anti-Economic Crime Section of the Dubai Police has registered 200 cases of counterfeit products worth Dh24,000,000 since the beginning of the current year.

During a Press conference on Tuesday, Major Rashid Mohammed Saleh, Deputy Director of the section, said that the Dubai Police have exerted maximum efforts to combat counterfeit products and piracy.

He said that in September, the police received information about an Asian man who possessed large quantities of fake HP printer cartridges in his flat, shop and warehouse.

According to the information, the suspect placed fake stickers of the brand on the cartridges and then sold it at cheap prices.

The police raided his flat and seized 30,000 pieces of cartridges worth Dh1,200,000.

In August, the police had arrested three persons and seized various printing appliances

He explained that according to a survey, it was found that 39 per cent of the customers were disappointed when they found that the ink was fake and 77 per cent said that they are scared to buy fake products.

An official from HP said at the Press conference that the Dubai Police came first at the regional level in seizing fake ink cartridges last year which reached 592,276 pieces and the total fake ink cartridges seized in the UAE has reached two million.

    T. Rose, a manager with HP,  revealed that 400,000 fake HP cartridges were seized during the first six months of 2012.

In September alone, the police have seized 42,000 fake HP cartridges, she said, adding that it is very difficult to differentiate between the fake and genuine products because the fraudsters make the counterfeit products in a professional way.

However, to overcome that, the company has put different marks to assist the customers to identify the genuine product.

She warned that the fake ink can harm the printers and people’s health.

It even causes losses of large quantities of papers.

The general director of HP in the Middle East, Saleem Zeada said that the campaign launched by the Dubai Police has seized large quantities of fake products exclusively made for HP printers.
