Ebay Give Official Response To Hp Toner Being Sold On Ebay

The Truth About HP Toner on eBay
There is alot of bad information floating around on eBay and elsewhere about sellers of HP Toner. Some of the bad information is spread by disgruntled buyers, uninformed buyers, sellers with a stake in the industry, resellers, refillers, office supply stores and others. Office supply stores, if you take them a cartridge from any seller on eBay, and ask them if a toner is refilled or starter – will almost always tell you that it is refilled, starter or whatever. That is because these stores make an incredible amount of money selling genuine toner and ink at retail prices.

Some of the misinformation is coming from a fellow eBay user’s guide who at best is uninformed and is at worst deliberately spreading false information to damage sellers. When I saw the guide appearing next to my listings, I reviewed it and found the erroneous information therein. I contacted the writer of the guide,  pointed out the errors and have to date been ignored. Thats the main reason I am taking the time to write this guide today. An informed marketplace is in everyone’s best interest.

The first thing to keep in mind is that just because toner is not in a retail box does not mean that it is not genuine or that it is not full retail toner. Sellers may not include the retail boxes for a variety of reasons, the most common being that they never had it to begin with. Toner can be purchased at bulk from distributors, that is, without the retail box. Many sellers obtain toners in this manner for resale. Despite the lack of a retail box, the toner is exactly what you’d get if you purchased from a retail store. Some buyers seem to have a hard time understanding this, due in part due to the mis-information spread by office stores as described above. They have an incentive to keep people buying retail boxed toners: they make a boatload of cash from it.

So, when you are looking at an eBay listing, how do you know if the seller is offering Genuine full toner, starters, refills or whatever? Its quite simple, actually. Just read the listing and look at the pictures. Of course, the seller could lie about (misrepresent) the item. Sellers that do this will not last very long on eBay, they’ll be suspended under an avalanche of charge backs, negative feedback and PayPal claims. If a seller has been selling toner for a while and more or less has decent feedback, it can be taken at face value that they are selling what they say they are.

To be sure you are buying full, genuine toner, look for the following:

    • Ensure that the orange pull tabs have not been removed.
    • Cartridges that are starters will say "Introductory" on the side. If they don’t say introductory, they are not starters.
    • Look for the word "Genuine" in the title of the listing.
    • Most of the HP printers will put a message on the screen informing you if you have non-genuine or starter cartridges.
    • Sellers of Genuine toner will state such up front in the listing very clearly. There will be no need to ask the seller. If they don’t say up front in a clear manner that their toner is full and genuine, assume that it is not and move on.
    • Always purchase with PayPal or your credit card to ensure protection against misrepresented items, should you need it.

If you do happen to get toner from a seller that you think is not genuine or is starter, the first thing to do is contact the seller and explain why you think this is so and ask for an explanation. If you are not happy with the explanation from the seller, you should open a claim with PayPal and/or eBay or ask to return the item before you break the seal or remove the tabs. Most sellers will not accept returns on toner once the seal has been broken unless it is defective – and thats perfectly reasonable because dishonest people have attempted to return empty toners for a refund as a scam. PayPal offers buyers plenty of protection against items SNAD (significantly not as described) so buyers need not worry about being left in the cold holding misrepresented product.

In summary, the fact of the matter is very few sellers are misrepresenting HP toner on eBay by passing off re-manufactured or starter cartridges or genuine full toners. Most of the times a buyer thinks he has starter or non-genuine toner when he does not. Often this is a result of the buyer either not reading the listing  (where it was clearly stated that the toner was refilled, etc) or the buyer has received erroneous advice from someone ignorant of what starter or refilled cartridges are and/or how to tell the difference.

If you cannot bring yourself to trust that the product is genuine when sellers say it is despite being armed with this information and having the protection from PayPal or your credit card company in the event an issue arrises, perhaps its a good idea to consider buying your toner at a retail store. There are risks and rewards to buying online (like every aspect of life) and you need to decide where your comfort level is and go with it.
