End Of An Era, Xerox Shuts Down Canadian Toner Plant
Closing of Oakville Xerox plant puts 69 people out of work
Longtime employee says news "was like a death in the family"

    .

A 27-year employee said news of the Xerox plant in Oakville closing “was like a death in the family.”

Dave Sapiano said employees were notified in July the plant would be closing in 60 days. They continued to produce the colour toner used in Xerox photocopiers and printers until Sept. 17.

The following day, they cleaned up the plant and on the Friday (Sept. 19), all three shifts came in to have lunch together and say their goodbyes.

John Quinn, head of corporate communications for Xerox Canada, said the plant closure affected 69 employees.

He said the toner being produced in Oakville was “an older toner product and as we began to produce the new generation of printers, copiers and multifunction devices, we began to utilize chemically-produced toner.”

With less demand for the older toner that utilized pulverized plastic, the decision was made to consolidate the production in Xerox’s facilities in the U.S. and Europe.

Quinn said the Oakville plant was built in 1968 and expanded in the early 1990s.

Sapiano said half to three-quarters of the employees had been with Xerox for at least 15 years.

He said knows a few people who were able to get jobs at Ford, but most others who have found work are making $8-10/hour less.
