Faulty printer blamed for fire, emergency plane landing

A malfunctioning printer was blamed Tuesday for a fire that forced a Toronto-bound flight to make an emergency landing Monday evening at East Texas Regional Airport.

The smoke was confined to the flight deck of the SkyWest Airlines aircraft that remained grounded at the airport in Longview on Tuesday, said Wes Horrocks, an airline spokesman. Its 58 passengers were not affected, and no one was injured.

Rick Davis, manager of East Texas Regional, said the airport’s amenities make it a favorite for pilots in such situations.

“It’s relatively rare for us to have emergency landings,” he said, “but pilots like to use it when necessary, because we have a 10,000-foot runway and emergency services available.”

The flight originated about 7 p.m. in Houston and developed problems shortly after takeoff, Horrocks said. Its original schedule called for an 11 p.m. landing in Toronto.

SkyWest operates the flight as a codeshare with United Airlines and Continental Airlines.

The passengers were taken to Dallas by bus and re-booked Tuesday on flights to Toronto, Horrocks said. There also was a crew of two pilots and two flight attendants on board.
