Hp’s Ceo Meg Whitman Says She Can’t Leave for Romney Cabinet Post
Anyone who’s wondering whether Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Meg Whitman will take a post in an administration of Mitt Romney, the answer is flatly no.
Seen outside the Tampa Convention Center just before New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gave his keynote speech at the Republican National Convention, Whitman said, “not at all” when asked if she would serve under Romney, adding she can’t leave struggling H-P at this time.
“When I joined H-P, I said that I would stay through this turnaround. I knew if Mitt won, I would not be able to join a Romney administration,” she said. “So I’m completely committed to H-P.”
Whitman’s name often surfaces when companies are looking for CEOs, or for public office. Whitman, of course built eBay Inc. EBAY +0.04% into an online powerhouse and her name surfaced more than a few times to become the head of Walt Disney Co. DIS -0.47%
Whitman, however, was unsuccessful in her 2010 bid for governor as she lost to Democrat Jerry Brown, who spent only a fraction of the $160 million the billionaire Whitman devoted to her effort.
Whitman’s assertion that she won’t leave H-P may settle the stock somewhat, as shares dipped Tuesday on rumors she might be called to a Romney cabinet post. Shares were down marginally in recent action.
